MANCHESTER UNITED - 'Peter Schmeichel' pre-Installation - July, 2006

“I created these six sculptures for the ‘Kit Room’, a new Hospitality Suite in the NW Quadrant at Old Trafford, home of ‘Manchester United’ Football Club, in August 2006. I turned Manchester United legends George Best, Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel into life-size steel sculptures to celebrate the launch of the newly renovated stand and hospitality areas at Old Trafford. Each of the three-dimensional figures has been created to not only be recognisable as the player, but to mimic their movement, stance and physical characteristics, sporting some of ‘Manchester United’s’ famous shirts from 1892 to the present day. Best is seen in his 1968 European final shirt running with the ball, Cantona, imperious, with his hands on his hips and head to the side, Schmeichel at full stretch and Rooney having just unleashed one his trademark thundering drives. The other two figures sporting the oldest shirts reflect the hairstyles (and moustaches!) of their era. I wanted the five wall-mounted sculptures and free-standing Rooney figure to relate to each other in the Hospitality Suite with contrasting, dynamic positions.”
